These options can be a great addition to your day, but understanding which days of your trip will be the best days to purchase these passes will be important to your planning.

If you’re wondering how to skip long lines and make the most of your park days, this guide will walk you through what each Lightning Lane pass offers, how they work, and how to use them effectively.

What Is the Lightning Lane System?

Lightning Lane is Disney World’s paid skip-the-line system. It allows guests to reserve access to select attractions at scheduled times, avoiding the standby queue. With the recent update, Disney has split the experience into two separate options: the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and the Lightning Lane Single Pass to use at individual rides.

This change gives guests more control and flexibility when planning their day and brings back the ability to book ahead of time, a feature many guests appreciated under the former FastPass+ system at Disney World.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass

The Lightning Lane Multi Pass is a reimagined version of Genie+ system. Disney updated a few parts of the previous system to allow more planning ahead. Cost ranges from $15-$40 per person, per theme park day.

Use the Lightning Lane Multi Pass to reserve multiple ride and attraction return times throughout the day.

The Multi Pass allows guests to reserve up to three attractions in advance for a specific park. These include one top-tier ride and two additional selections from other attractions.

Once you use your first pass of the day, you can continue making additional selections, one at a time, as your day progresses.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass Features:

  • Book up to three Lightning Lane experiences in advance.
  • Available at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.
  • Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels can make selections seven days in advance for the length of their stay (up to 14 days).
  • Off-site guests can book three days in advance, one day at a time.

This is a great option if you’re wanting to maximize your time in one theme park for the day, and our family prefers adding on the Lightning Lane Multi Pass option especially at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

Lightning Lane Individual Pass

The Lightning Lane Individual Pass is a separate, pay-per-ride option for Disney’s most in-demand attractions. These rides are not included in the Multi Pass and must be purchased separately.

Attractions that use Individual Lightning Lane:

  • TRON Lightcycle / Run (Magic Kingdom)
  • Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT)
  • Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (Hollywood Studios)
  • Avatar Flight of Passage (Animal Kingdom)

The Lightning Lane Single Pass option works great when you want to make these rides are built into your theme park day.

Lightning Lane Strategy Guide

Both pass types can be booked through the My Disney Experience app. Make sure your app is updated and linked to your park tickets.

Ideally, you’ll want to book your Lightning Lane passes when they are first available – for Disney Resort Guests that will be 7 days in advance, plus length of stay. For non-Disney Resort Guests, that will be 3 days in advance.

However, if you decide once you’re in the theme park for the day that you want to check the Lightning Lane availability, you can purchase the Multi Pass or Single Pass options on the same day if there is still availability.

How We Use the Lightning Lane Options

We like using the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and SIngle Pass options for different types of trips. Most often, if I’m traveling on a solo trip I will get the Single Pass option for rides I know I don’t want to miss during our trip.

And when our family of four visits, we actually prefer putting our budget towards getting a Lightning Lane Multi Pass plus needed Single Pass options, over even upgrading tickets to a park hopper option. This allows us to maximize our experience in each theme park on each day.

Often, we will choose to just purchase it on specific theme park days when we plan on riding the most rides, and spending most of our day in the theme parks. On more casual days when we plan on coming into the park later or moving a at a more casual pace, we skip adding on the Lightning Lane.

Making Your Lightning Lane Strategy

How you’ll want to use the Lightning Lane options during your trip will most depend on your trip goals. If you want to fit as much as possible into your theme park days, it is a great way to maximize your time.

Also, if you’ll be visiting during a busy time of year, it can be a great way to avoid longer waits in lines. Gauge your interest in using the Lightning Lane options ahead of your booking window opening and we recommend grabbing the days you KNOW you’ll want to use a Lightning Lane when the option opens for your group.

The other great thing is not everyone has to have the Lightning Lane, if not everyone wants to ride! So you can purchase the passes for just the members of your party that want to ride a specific thrill ride or are looking to maximize the number of rides they are on during the day.

Tips for Making the Most of Lightning Lane

  • Plan ahead and book your top priorities as soon as your booking window opens.
  • Use a combination of rope drop and Lightning Lane selections for the best coverage.
  • Start with high-demand attractions early in the day to get the most out of your selections.
  • You can book up to two Lightning Lane Single Pass options per day.
  • If you are park hopping, after you’ve used your first use of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass in your original theme park, you can select attractions in other theme parks as well.
  • Guests can hold 3 Lightning Lane Pass selections at one time. (Which could include your two individually purchased Single Pass selections and one Multi pass selection.)

Lightning Lane Premier Pass

If budget isn’t a concern and you’re looking for a way to skip the lines without spending tons of time on your phone, the Lightning Lane Premier Pass may be something to consider.  This is the top tier of Lightning Lane experience available, and also comes at the most premium cost.

One of the benefits of this pass is that it offers access to all of the attractions available with both the Lightning Lane Multipass and Lightning Lane Single Passes at your chosen theme park.

Similarly to the MultiPass option, this pass will be valid during regular park hours only. Guests with hotel benefits such as Early Entry can enjoy attractions via the Standby Line.

Deciding if the Premier Pass is For You

The Lightning Lane Premier Pass also allows guests more flexibility during their theme park day. While Lightning Lane Multipass requires reservations, guests using the Premier Pass can ride what they like, when they like!

With Lightning Lane Premier Pass, you can scan into each attraction once per day.

A big difference from the Lightning Lane MultiPass is that there is no park hopper option. You must purchase the Lightning Lane Premier Pass for a specific theme park for that day.

Premier Pass pricing can vary depending on the date, and they range from $129-$449 plus tax per person. So as you can see, this is a considerable per person price difference from the Lighting Lane Multi Pass.

Average range of Premier Pass:

  • Magic Kingdom: $329-$449
  • EPCOT: $169-$249
  • Hollywood Studios: $269-$349
  • Animal Kingdom: $129-$199

Guests who purchase a Lightning Lane Premier Pass receive complimentary PhotoPass Photo downloads for the day.

Whether this option will be worth it to you will very much come down to whether this is in your budget or not. If you’re planning an extravaganza with no costs barred type of trip, it may be a consideration. However with pricing that can run higher than your theme park ticket for the day cost, if you are working within a budget for the trip we never would gravitate towards this option.

Also, keep in mind depending on your party size if you’re wanting to consider a special experience, you may also want to look into the VIP Tour options at Walt Disney World. Which can give your party a premium experience at a premium cost as well.

Planning Your Theme Park Day

The introduction of the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Individual Pass gives guests more flexibility and the ability to plan their Disney World visits more effectively. By understanding how each option works and how to use them together, you can reduce time spent in lines and enjoy more attractions during your trip.

As you plan your Disney day, consider whether it will be a benefit to consider these options and purchase them for some of your theme park days. We like the option of being able to shorten our time in line and strategically use these during our trips!
