What Is Rider Switch at Disney World?
Rider Switch makes it easy for families to take turns on rides. Part of the group waits in line and rides first, while the others wait outside. When the first group returns, the waiting Guest(s) can ride without having to stand in the regular queue.

Basically, Rider Switch makes it easy for parents to deal with the long line queues when they have little ones, or those unable to stand in line.
How to Use Rider Switch
Before entering the line, tell the Cast Member you’d like to use Rider Switch. (Everyone in your group must be present when you set it up.)
They’ll scan your tickets or MagicBands and assign Rider Switch access to the second group.

One group (Parent A + any kids who want to ride) goes through the regular line or Lightning Lane.
The second group waits outside with the non-rider(s). You can go get snacks, take a quick bathroom break, or wait with a napping child.
When Group 1 finishes, Group 2 enters through the Lightning Lane or Rider Switch entrance.

Often, the second group can bring 1 to 2 additional riders, which means older siblings might get to ride twice. Talk with a Cast Member to get details for the specific ride you’ll be going on.
Who Can Use Rider Switch?
You can use Rider Switch when someone in your group isn’t able, or doesn’t want to ride, but can’t wait outside the line by themselves. This often happens if a guest doesn’t meet the ride’s height or boarding requirements, or simply plans to skip the attraction.

Rider Switch is also for guests who have a service animal that can’t ride the attraction, or who would rather not use the provided kennel.
It also may be available for a guest who can’t comfortably go through the queue itself due to its layout or conditions and their specific needs.

Can You Use Rider Switch with Lightning Lanes?
Yes! You can absolutely use Rider Switch with Lightning Lane, and combining the two can be a huge time-saver for families.Â
If your group has Lightning Lane reservations (whether through Multi Pass or Individual Lightning Lane), the first riding group enters through the Lightning Lane as usual while the second adult waits with the non-rider.
Once they switch, the second group typically returns through the Lightning Lane or Rider Switch entrance without having to wait in the standby line.
Just keep in mind that each person who plans to ride still needs their own Lightning Lane reservation! Rider Switch doesn’t replace that, it simply prevents you from waiting twice.
When used together, this strategy is one of the fastest ways to experience popular rides while keeping little ones comfortable and avoiding long lines.
When Rider Switch Might Not Be Worth It
Sometimes it’s easier to skip it.
You might not need Rider Switch if:
- The wait time is under 15–20 minutes
- Everyone wants to ride together
- Older kids can ride alone
- You’re short on time and only riding once anyway
Use it strategically for rides with long wait times. Or if you have a little one napping that needs an adult to stay with them!
