Here we are covering everything you need to know about MagicBands, from what they are and how they work, to whether they’re worth it for your Disney experience.

We also have a review video All About MagicBands on our Moms with Mouse Ears YouTube channel! Where you can see the MagicBands in action and hear our personal tips from the parks.

What Is a MagicBand?

A MagicBand is a wearable wristband designed to streamline your Disney World vacation. It connects to your My Disney Experience account and can be used to enter the theme parks, unlock your Disney Resort hotel room, charge purchases, and link your photos from rides and PhotoPass photographers. MagicBands are waterproof, adjustable, and come in a variety of colors and fun Disney designs.

You can purchase MagicBands online through shopDisney, at Disney Resort hotels, or in retail locations around Walt Disney World. Some guests like to match their MagicBand to their park outfit or favorite Disney character, while others stick to a simple color or design.

Either way, it’s a convenient and customizable part of your Disney gear.

What Can a MagicBand Do?

MagicBands are meant to make your Disney trip easier and more magical. They serve as your park ticket, allowing you to scan into the theme parks with a simple tap. If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel, your MagicBand also functions as your room key.

You can link a payment method to your Disney account and use your MagicBand to make purchases for food, drinks, and merchandise throughout the parks and resorts.

Another great feature is that your MagicBand will automatically link any PhotoPass images or ride photos to your account. If you’ve purchased Lightning Lane access, your MagicBand can be used to scan into those attractions as well. It’s an all-in-one tool that saves time and keeps everything at your fingertips.

What Is the Difference Between MagicBand and MagicBand+?

In 2022, Disney introduced the MagicBand+, which offers all the same basic functionality as the original MagicBand, with a few additional features. MagicBand+ lights up and vibrates during nighttime shows and interactive experiences throughout the parks. It can also be used for certain games, like the Batuu Bounty Hunters adventure in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Unlike the original MagicBand, MagicBand+ requires charging, as it includes a rechargeable battery.

We like bringing these USB plugs that I get from Amazon, to keep all of our MagicBand+ charging in the same spot in our resort room. And we charge it each night of our trip, so that way it stays charged.

If you love tech or want to enhance your park experience with interactive elements, MagicBand+ might be a fun option. However, for many families, the original MagicBand still gets the job done and doesn’t require worrying about battery life.

How Much Do MagicBands Cost?

The cost of a MagicBand depends on the style and features. Basic MagicBands typically range from $19.99 to $34.99, while MagicBand+ starts at around $34.99 and goes up for themed or limited-edition versions.

If you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel, you can often purchase MagicBands at a discounted price through your My Disney Experience account prior to your trip. This can be a great way to save a few dollars and ensure everyone in your travel party is ready to go.

Do You Have to Use a MagicBand at Disney World?

MagicBands are convenient, but they’re not required. Disney offers a few alternatives if you prefer not to wear one. One option is Disney’s MagicMobile service, which lets you use your smartphone and digital wallet to access park tickets, Lightning Lanes, and more. Another option is just using your ticket physical card that functions much like a MagicBand for things like entering the theme park.

Many families find MagicBands to be the easiest option. They allow you to move through your day hands-free, without digging through your bag or pulling out your phone every time you need to scan into something. We purchased the MagicBand+ for everyone in our family and then we have reused it on our follow-up trips after purchasing them.

Depending on how often you’re at Disney World, and whether extras are in the budget, may determine how useful these will be for your travel party.

Where to Buy a MagicBand at Disney World

MagicBands are available for purchase at several locations. You can buy them online at shopDisney.com, at Disney World resort shops, or at retail stores within the parks.

If you’re staying on Disney property, be sure to check your My Disney Experience account for the option to pre-order MagicBands at a discount and have them shipped to your home before your vacation.

Are MagicBands Worth It?

For many families, getting MagicBands is going to be worth it. They offer convenience, a touch of Disney magic, and simplify many aspects of your day in the parks.

While they’re not essential, they do enhance the overall experience, particularly when you’re juggling kids, strollers, snacks, and more.

MagicBand+ is a fun upgrade for guests looking for a more interactive park experience, but the original MagicBand remains a reliable and budget-friendly option that gets the job done.
