What to Pack for an August Disney Trip

For an August trip to Walt Disney World, you’ll want to pack light and comfortable clothing due to the hot and humid weather. Be sure to bring breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials.

Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes. Additionally, consider bringing a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, as well as a small backpack or bag to carry your essentials while exploring the parks.

It’s also a good idea to pack some rain gear, as afternoon showers are common in Florida during the summer months.

We like to schedule dining reservations and time back at the resort pool in the middle of the day on our summer trips, so that we aren’t walking through the theme parks in the hottest parts of the day.

Traveling in August Packing Tips

  • Pack a jacket or poncho to be prepared for pop up showers.
  • Take full advantage of water activities and plan time at the pool or water park!
  • Bring fans, cooling towels, hats, sunscreen, and clothing that will work for the hottest weather of the year.

I personally like wearing yoga bottom sandals in the theme parks that are comfortable and my feet will not overheat in them. Make sure your selected shoe choices allow you to walk lots of steps every day!

We also spent plenty of time at the pool when we visit Walt Disney World in the summer! Multiple swimsuits and coverups were a must!

Special Events in August

In August, the main special happening at Walt Disney World is the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, which typically begins in late July and runs through the fall.

This event offers guests the opportunity to sample a wide variety of international cuisine and beverages from kiosks around the World Showcase at EPCOT.

Additionally, there is Food & Wine themed merchandise, and special Eat to the Beat concerts playing on the American Gardens Theatre stage.

Why Disney World in August?

Many families need to visit Walt Disney World in the summer when all of their kids’ schedules align to take a family vacation.

In August, you’ll find some of the hottest temperatures of the year (my running joke is that it feels like you’re walking on the sun at this time of year while going around the theme parks) but with planning and timing your schedule around the weather – you can make the most out of a trip in August.

Visiting Walt Disney World in the hottest part of the year also makes it a great time to visit the water parks, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. When we visit during the summer we also love spending a good amount of time in the pool at our resort as well.

The necessary mid-day breaks can actually lead to a more relaxing vacation. The heat almost forces you to slow down. On our summer trips, we always take a mid-day break and head back to our resort, so we are not in the parks in the hottest part of the day.

Essential Items for August at Disney

Items to be prepared for the heat are a must when visiting in August:

If you’ve forgotten any of these heat preparedness items, most of the theme parks have sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, fans, and cooling towels available at kiosks and souvenir shops!

What to put in your Disney Park Bag

Plan to pack these items in your Disney theme park bag. You’ll want these items handy throughout the day at the theme park.

Our most used theme park bag items:

Other Park Bag Essentials

You’ll find these essentials handy to have in your Disney park bag all year long:

  • Portable charger: With all the photo-taking, ride-waiting, and app-checking you’ll be doing, your phone’s battery will likely drain quickly. Bring a portable charger to keep your devices charged throughout the day.
  • Rain poncho or jacket: Those Florida pop up showers happen frequently, so it’s a good idea to pack a rain poncho or light packable jacket.
  • Autograph book: If you’re a fan of the characters, bring an autograph book for the characters to sign.
  • Snacks and water bottle: Disney World allows outside food and drinks, so bring some snacks and a refillable water bottle to save money and stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Backpack or bag: You’ll need a bag to carry all your essentials, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and souvenirs. Bring a comfortable backpack or bag that won’t weigh you down during the day.

August Disney Touring Tips

Make the most of your summer trip to Walt Disney World with these touring tips!

  • Take an afternoon break to recharge at the resort and spend some time at the pool.
  • Plan in a water park day to maximize your water fun!
  • Pick out your top things to see that day every morning, so your family has a plan of the “must do” items at each theme park or location. Pick your top 3 rides everyone would like to do, 2 experiences, and the top place you’d like to grab food!

What else should you bring to Disney World?

During the summer, we almost always know that we will be headed back to the resort room in the middle of the day – but I pack my bag as if we are going to be gone all day. Just in case.

Snacks help keep everyone fed in case of being stuck in a line and it is a good idea to bring your own water bottles to have water handy. I like to keep multiple phone chargers in my park bag, because I know I will be taking lots of photos.

Travel Documents

You’ll want to make sure to remember these items during your trip to Disney World:

  • Valid government-issued ID: This can be a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID. You will need this to enter the park and to purchase alcohol if you are of legal drinking age.
  • Disney World tickets: Make sure to bring your tickets with you to the park. You can either print them out or have them on your phone through the My Disney Experience app.
  • MagicBands: If you have a MagicBand, make sure to bring it with you to the park. This will serve as your park ticket, hotel room key, and can be used to make purchases throughout the park.
  • Reservation confirmations: If you have made any dining reservations or Genie+ selections, these confirmations will be on your phone.

Health and Safety Items

There are First Aid Stations available in all of the theme parks that you can get wellness supplies, as well as use for a quiet place for mothers with little ones. These items below I like to keep on hand, just in case!

  • Hand sanitizer: Always good to have at meals or after going through a ride line, keep this handy to make sure little ones don’t pick up germs.
  • Sunscreen: That Florida sun is hot! Re-apply sunscreen throughout the day to make sure you don’t get a sunburn. (And I like to travel with a Sun Bum After Sun spray, just in case!)
  • First-aid kit: I like having items on hand like bandaids, ointment, and bug spray sticks to make sure we can take care of any minor bumps or bites that may happen during our travels.
  • Reusable water bottle: You can fill this up throughout the parks to stay hydrated.

Food and Snacks

If your family wants to have breakfast in the resort room, consider having an Amazon Fresh order dropped off at bell services. You can keep items like GoGo Squeez, yogurt, cereal, and more on hand to have in the room for quick snacks.

Plan snack breaks into your day, and while there are plenty of kiosks and options throughout the parks, it is always a good idea to have some snacks on hand in your park bag. Especially for little ones that may have a set diet or food preferences.

One option in addition to asking for cups of water at quick service restaurants is to bring a reusable water bottle. Ask for your free glass of water and then keep your water bottle replenished as you tour the parks.
