History of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line has a rich history that began in the early 20th century. It has grown from simple beginnings into a renowned cruise line. You will find a fascinating journey of innovation and expansion in its fleet.

Early Beginnings in 1923

Disney Cruise Line’s story started long before the first ship set sail. In 1923, Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded the Disney Brothers Studio, which would eventually lead to the Disney brand. While the cruise line itself did not come into existence until much later, the idea of family-oriented entertainment was already taking shape.

In 1996, Disney officially launched Disney Cruise Line. The first vessel, the Disney Magic, debuted in 1998. This ship was designed to provide a unique experience tailored for families, with Disney-themed activities and entertainment.  The cruise line aimed to bring the magic of Disney into the ocean.

Evolution of the Fleet

After the launch of Disney Magic, Disney Cruise Line expanded its fleet. In 1999, the Disney Wonder joined, offering similar experiences. Both ships became famous for their distinctive designs and onboard activities.

The fleet continued to grow with the addition of Disney Dream in 2011 and Disney Fantasy in 2012. These ships included new features like larger water areas and unique dining experiences.

Disney Dream Water Areas

In recent years, newer ships like Disney Wish (maiden voyage 2022) and Disney Treasure (maiden voyage scheduled for December 2024) were introduced. They focus on immersive storytelling and modern amenities, maintaining Disney’s commitment to family fun.

Itineraries and Destinations

Disney Cruise Line offers a variety of itineraries that take you to some of the best destinations around the world. Each cruise lets you explore unique ports while enjoying the magic of Disney on board. Here’s a closer look at the popular routes and special ports you can visit.

Popular Cruise Routes

Disney Cruise Line has many popular routes. In the Caribbean, you can visit stunning islands like St. Thomas, Tortola, and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. The Bahamas route includes stops at Nassau and Castaway Cay, where you can enjoy sun, sand, and Disney experiences.

Castaway Cay, Bahamas

Also brand new to the itineraries is a stop in the Caribbean to see Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. This is Disney’s newest port of call, and second exclusive stop in the Caribbean. Castaway Cay is an island that is only open to Disney Cruise Line ships, while Lookout Cay is one area on a larger island that has both locals and tourist destinations beyond Disney cruises.

If you prefer cooler destinations, consider cruises to Alaska. These cruises often include breathtaking scenery, with stops in places like Juneau and Ketchikan. For a different vibe, the Mediterranean cruises take you to famous cities like Barcelona and Rome, allowing for a mix of culture and Disney magic.

Exclusive Ports of Call

Some Disney cruises feature exclusive ports that enhance your journey. Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, offers pristine beaches and family activities. This unique spot is a highlight for many guests.

Costa Maya Excursion, Western Caribbean cruise

We visited Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico on our Disney Magic cruise. With excursions that let us dive into the local culture by painting some alebrijes and seeing an ancient Mayan city. You might also visit Hawaii on select sailings. Enjoy beautiful beaches, volcanoes, and rich culture.

For those looking for unique experiences, New Zealand and Australia offer stunning landscapes and adventures. From the Great Barrier Reef to cozy city tours, these destinations provide a broad range of activities. Exploring Europe on Disney cruises allows you to discover historic towns and beautiful coastlines.

Planning Your Disney Cruise

Planning your Disney cruise is an exciting task. You need to choose the right ship, budget wisely, and consider any loyalty programs that can save you money or enhance your trip. Here are the details to help you make the best choices.

Selecting the Best Disney Ship

When picking a Disney cruise ship, consider what you want to experience. Disney offers different ships like the Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish, each with its own features.

  • Disney Wish: This ship has the Marceline Market for dining, an amazing kids’ club, and more entertainment options.
  • Disney Fantasy: Known for its family-friendly amenities and spacious areas.
  • Disney Dream: One of the larger sister ships, is a classic Disney cruising experience with plenty of space.
  • Disney Wonder: Features character dining Tiana and friends.
  • Disney Magic: Features character dining with Rapunzel and friends.

Think about your travel dates and activities you want. Some ships have unique itineraries, including stops at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. Checking the ship’s layout can also help you find staterooms with preferable views, like starboard side cabins for great ocean vistas.

Castaway Cay, Bahamas

Budget and Pricing Considerations

Creating a budget for your Disney cruise is essential. Prices can vary significantly based on the ship, travel dates, and chosen stateroom type.

Plan for costs like:

  • Cruise fare: Base price varies by ship.
  • Port fees and taxes: These are added to your fare.
  • Excursions: Include activities at ports, like snorkeling in Caribbean waters.
  • Transportation: To get to port, if you’re coming from Walt Disney World or another location.

Consider onboard spending too. You’ll want to budget for dining at ports, shopping on board, and transportation at port.

Look for excursions through the Disney Cruise Line website, that feature an all inclusive prices that typically include transportation to and from the excursion and sometimes even snacks or water.

Membership and Loyalty Programs

If you love Disney cruises, join the Castaway Club. This loyalty program rewards you based on your cruise history.

Benefits include:

  • Exclusive Member Offers: Discounts on future cruises.
  • Early Booking: Access to cabins before the general public.

Using your membership can save you money while enhancing your experience. Check your eligibility and keep an eye on exclusive promotions that could benefit your next voyage. We love being a part of the Castaway Club and enjoy all of the benefits!

How to Choose Which Cruise is Right for Your Family

Choosing which ship will be the best for your family comes down to two things: is it sailing to the itinerary you’re looking for, from the port you’d like to leave from? And does it have amenities – like restaurants and shows – that appeal to your family?

If yes to both of these things, then that Disney cruise should be a good match for your family. While many repeat cruisers have their favorites, the bottom line is that Disney Cruise Line provides an exceptional experience on all of their ships. So you’re sure to have an amazing cruise no matter which ship you sail on!

Disney Wish Atrium

How to Choose Which Ship

We always recommend to go on the shorter 3 or 4 night cruise from Port Canaveral for your first time, if your family has never cruised before and wants to try out cruising to see how you like it.

In 2025, the Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish are all sailing this route with a shorter itinerary. After you select down the port location, months you’d like to cruise in and dates you have available to cruise, this will further narrow down which ships will be sailing at the time you’d like to cruise. We also like sailing out of Port Canaveral because it makes it easy to combine a Disney Cruise with a Walt Disney World vacation.

Disney Wish & Disney Magic

Any of those three ships would make an excellent first time cruising experience, if Port Canaveral is where you’re looking at sailing from, this narrows it down to whether your family would want to try a smaller ship with exclusive dining options, a larger ship with bigger kids clubs and amenities, or the newest ship with the most state of the art decor.

Get Ready to Set Sail on Disney Cruise Line

We love each of the experiences for what they are, and in our experience you can’t go wrong with a Disney Cruise Line sailing!
