Our Disney Cruise from Galveston Experience

We sailed from the port in Galveston aboard the Disney Magic in February 2023 and had an amazing experience on the 5-night Western Caribbean cruise. The cruise stopped at Cozumel, Mexico and Costa Maya, Mexico, as well as having some days at sea. It was the perfect blend of a relaxing vacation.

Disney Cruise Line is known for its high-quality service, family-friendly activities, and stunning ships. You will find something for everyone, from magical shows to dining options that cater to different tastes. If you’re considering a holiday packed with entertainment and unforgettable memories, a Disney cruise is a fantastic choice.

Galveston not only serves as your departure port but also offers attractions to explore before and after your cruise. Enjoying the local culture and sights can enhance your travel experience. Preparing for your trip with the right information can help you make the most of your Disney cruise adventure.

We flew into George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Airport Code: IAH) in Houston the day before our cruise and took Disney transportation to the port in Galveston on our cruising day. It was about a 45 minute ride, and the the cruise line picked us up right at the airport.

Since we arrived the day before, we were able to rent a car and drive down to Johnson Space Center in Houston, to see the space museum there. It was an easy drive from the airport and we rented the car for only a few hours. This was a great addition to the trip and we enjoyed being able to do a bit of sightseeing before our cruise departure.

I booked the Marriott hotel right at the IAH Airport, and it was a seamless point to be able to stay to have a lot of amenities and also be close to where the Disney cruise transportation would be picking us up near the baggage area at the airport on the day of our cruise.

Overview of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line offers memorable experiences for families and individuals alike. With unique ships and engaging activities, you can enjoy the magic of Disney while cruising the seas. Here are some key points about the cruise line and its offerings.

The Legacy of Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line first set sail in 1998, establishing a new way for families to experience Disney. Since then, it has expanded to multiple ships and popular destinations. Each ship is designed with Disney themes and elements to make your journey special.

You can enjoy shows featuring beloved Disney characters and themed dining experiences. Families can also access youth clubs for kids, ensuring fun and safe activities while adults unwind.

The cruise line has received numerous awards, showcasing its commitment to excellence in service and entertainment. Disney aims to create unforgettable memories at sea.

Choosing the Right Disney Ship

Disney Cruise Line has several ships, each offering different experiences. We have a full comparison on the blog comparing all of the Disney Cruise Line ships. The main ships currently in operation include:

  • Disney Magic
  • Disney Wonder
  • Disney Dream
  • Disney Fantasy
  • Disney Wish
  • Disney Treasure (Sailing December 2024)

We personally sailed on the Disney Magic out of the port of Galveston because it was the one and only sailing of the itinerary we were looking to sail on.

That being said, we were still incredibly excited to be sailing on the Disney Magic, as it was our first time sailing on that ship and we were looking forward to comparing it to our experience its sister ship, the Disney Wonder. We had been on the Disney Wonder a few years previously for an Eastern Caribbean sailing. Each of the Disney ships offer an incredible experience and we love how they each have their own personality.

All of the Disney Cruise ships offer a family-friendly atmosphere, with a wide variety of experiences. The main differences between the sister ships of the Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder are the dining experiences. In recent years, the dining on those original two ships has been refurbished to offer new and exciting dining options that are different on each of the ships.

Check out our ranking of all of the Disney Cruise Line ships and which experiences are best for different types of families and cruisers.

Departing from Galveston

When you choose to cruise from Galveston, you will find convenient facilities and shuttle services that enhance your travel experience. The Port of Galveston is designed to make your departure smooth and enjoyable. It is a smaller port, and we found it easy to navigate. The Disney Cruise Line was the only cruise company using the port on the day we were there, and helpful Cast Members were able to help us through the embarkation process.

There are multiple cruise lines that do sail out of the port, so if you are there on a day when multiple lines are operating, follow the signs for Disney Cruise Line to get to the correct cruise terminal.

Port of Galveston Facilities

The Port of Galveston is well-equipped to handle cruise guests. Parking is available at the port for both short- and long-term needs. And our shuttle from IAH dropped us off right at the cruise port doors to be able to check-in.

If you’ll be arriving in your own car, you will want to reserve parking ahead of arriving. One of the most well known parking facilities is the EZ Cruise Parking, where you can right by the port in lots with 24-hour facility. You can make a parking reservation on their website, and it is open for all cruise lines – not just Disney Cruise Line!

They do not have a parking garage option, but if you would like to make sure your car is covered while you’re on your trip, look into their “Covered Parking” services. This helps protect your car from the salt air, sun, and air debris from industrial facilities in the area. They can be added on your reservation or you can ask about availability when you arrive. This is an additional charge beyond regular parking.

Disney Cruise Destinations

Disney cruises offer a variety of exciting destinations when sailing out of Galveston. You can expect to visit stunning places in the Western Caribbean and unique ports that provide memorable experiences. Here are a number of other great options, although as you probably have already guessed – the Cozumel & Costa Maya itinerary would be one of my top recommendations!

Exploring the Western Caribbean

The Western Caribbean is a popular choice for Disney cruises. This region features beautiful beaches and vibrant cultures. You can visit Cozumel, Mexico, known for its stunning coral reefs and excellent diving spots. We absolutely loved our time in Costa Maya as well, although this is one of the rarer ports on the Disney Cruise Line itinerary

Another key stop is Grand Cayman, where you can enjoy local attractions like Stingray City. Here, you can swim with friendly stingrays and explore the clear waters. Additionally, Falmouth, Jamaica, offers rich history and scenic views. You can learn about local culture and enjoy the stunning landscapes.

Currently for the upcoming years of 2025 and 2026, the main port destination with availability sailing out of Galveston is Progreso, Mexico combined with some days at sea for 4-day cruises out of Galveston.

There are also a number of 5-7 day cruise options with additional port options like George Town, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and a seven night cruise that includes a stop at Costa Maya! (This cruise aboard the Disney Magic is March 29-April 5, 2026, and who knows… you may just see me on that one! I wasn’t kidding when I said I really, really loved that itinerary!)

Unique Destinations on Disney Cruises

Disney cruises also take you to unique destinations that stand out. San Juan, Puerto Rico, is one such port. You can explore colorful streets and historic sites, including the famous forts.

In George Town, Grand Cayman, you can shop for local crafts or relax on the beach. The blend of adventure and relaxation makes every stop special.

These destinations combine fun, culture, and relaxation, making your cruise experience unforgettable. Each port offers something different, ensuring memorable experiences throughout your journey.

Castaway Cay

There is also one special cruise offered in 2025 (March 24-31, 2025) that sails out of Port of Galveston and ending at the port at San Juan, Puerto Rico. On this cruise you’ll stop at both Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, their private beach ports in the Caribbean. Making this a unique sailing out of Galveston for sure!

Onboard Experiences

When you board a Disney cruise from Galveston, you’ll find a wide range of experiences. From entertainment and dining to activities for the whole family, there is something for everyone to enjoy throughout your trip.

Entertainment and Shows

On Disney cruises, entertainment is a highlight. You can experience Broadway-style shows featuring Disney characters and stories. These performances include dazzling costumes, impressive choreography, and captivating music.

Disney Cruise Line also offers movie nights under the stars with Disney classics and new releases. You can enjoy games and trivia that involve popular characters. This variety keeps everyone engaged, making your evenings magical.

Dining Options and Palate Pleasures

Dining on your Disney cruise is both fun and delicious. You have several restaurants to choose from, including Animator’s PalateLumière’s, and Rapunzel’s Royal Table. Each restaurant offers unique menus and themes that reflect beloved Disney stories.

We loved being able to experience the dining that was exclusive to the Disney Magic and I definitely this is a big part of making the atmosphere on each of the original ships different. Characters put on a show and interact with you at Rapunzel’s Royal Table and it was an overall great time at all of the dining on the Disney Magic!

Youth Clubs and Family Activities

Kids and families have plenty of things to do on board. Disney’s youth clubs cater to various age groups, from toddlers to teens. These clubs offer creative activities, games, and themed events led by trained counselors. The Oceaneer Club is for ages 3 to 10 and offers themed rooms that are perfect to explore!

Oceaneer Club on the Disney Magic

You can also explore the clubs together during Open House times on the ship. Family activities include dance parties, character meet-and-greets, and scavenger hunts. These moments allow you to bond with your kids while being able to see some of their favorite areas in the clubs.

For Tweens there is the Edge club, for ages 11 to 14 to hang out and play games. And for ages 15 to 17 the Vibe club is open at late hours to keep teenagers entertained.

Exclusively Adult Zones

For adults, Disney cruises provide relaxing spaces to unwind. The Quiet Cove Pool is an adults-only area where you can enjoy peace away from the hustle and bustle.

You can also visit the spa for rejuvenating treatments, including massages and facials. Exclusive bars and lounges offer a variety of cocktails and wine selections, perfect for a night out at sea.

Accommodations and Staterooms

When you choose a Disney cruise from Galveston, you’ll find a range of stateroom options and services designed for comfort and enjoyment. Your accommodations can greatly enhance your cruise experience, making it vital to understand what is available.

Stateroom Varieties

Disney offers various stateroom types to fit your needs. You can choose from inside staterooms, oceanview options, and spacious verandah staterooms. Each type serves a different budget and preference.

  • Inside Staterooms: No windows but cozy and great for families.
  • Oceanview Staterooms: Includes a window for natural light and views of the sea.
  • Verandah Staterooms: Offers a private balcony to enjoy sunsets and fresh air.

Each stateroom features a split-bathroom design for convenience. Families will appreciate the extra space, ensuring everyone feels comfortable.

We stayed in an Oceanview Stateroom on our Disney Magic cruise, as it was just my young teen daughter and myself on the trip. We had plenty of space and enjoyed being able to look out onto the ocean.

Service and Amenities

Your experience on board includes excellent service and a variety of amenities. Stateroom hosts are available for assistance, ensuring your needs are met promptly.

You can expect:

  • Room Service: Enjoy meals or snacks in your room at any time.
  • Family-Friendly Options: Some staterooms include additional bedding for kids.
  • Entertainment: Each stateroom comes with a TV and movies for family fun.

With thoughtful touches and attention to detail, Disney ensures that your stay is enjoyable and relaxing.

Planning Your Cruise

Planning your Disney cruise from Galveston requires careful thought about your sail date and making reservations. Getting these details right can lead to a smoother experience and more enjoyment for the entire family.

Choosing the Best Sail Date

When choosing a sail date, consider school schedules and local events. Busy times, like summer vacations and holidays, might have higher prices and fuller ships.

Check the Disney cruise website for rates during different times of the year. Off-peak periods often offer better prices and fewer crowds.

We picked our cruise because it was the only week in 2023 that this specific itinerary was offered. My daughter and I both enjoy learning about Mayan culture, so with stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya, this was a unique port combination for Disney Cruise Line.

At the port in Cozumel, we opted for an excursion we booked through Disney Cruise Line to go paint alebrijes animals and then go on a tour of how the ancient Mayan made cocao, or as Americans call it, chocolate!

Then in Costa Maya, we booked an excursion through Disney Cruise Line to visit the ancient Mayan ruins at Chacchoben.

This was an amazing excursion we both loved, being able to see the historic city and learn more about the culture there. If you have a child that is interested in learning more about the Classic Period civilizations, this is a fabulous itinerary to dive into culture and learning.

During our tour, we were able to walk the grounds and see many areas of the ancient city. Our guide was helpful in sharing more about the history of the area and the Mayan people.

So choosing the best sailing day for your family can come down to a number of considerations: perhaps it is the best fit itinerary? Or the best time to travel for your family? Use the Disney Cruise website to help you narrow in on the best fit sailings for your family.

Making Reservations and Pre-Cruise Tips

Start your reservations early to secure good rates and availability. Use the official Disney cruise website to book. This ensures you get the best deal and any promotions available.

After booking, check to prepare for embarkation day. You’ll need to fill out online check-in forms for security. This speeds up the boarding process and helps avoid delays.

Seasonal and Themed Cruises

Disney Cruise Line offers unique seasonal and themed cruises that enhance your travel experience. You can celebrate holidays with special events and enjoy themed excursions to exciting destinations.

Disney Cruises are famous for their holiday celebrations. During Christmas on Very Merrytime cruises, the ships transform into festive wonderlands. You’ll see beautiful decorations, lights, and a giant Christmas tree. The Very Merrytime cruises out of Galveston are no exception, and this can be a great alternative to going out of one of the larger ports!

Themed Excursions and Destinations

Disney cruises also offer themed excursions that add excitement to your trip. On a Bahamian cruise, you might visit Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. This private island features beautiful beaches and fun water activities.

Costa Maya is another popular destination with cultural experiences. You can explore Mayan ruins, snorkel in the clear waters, or simply relax on the beach.

Costa Maya is absolutely one port that I would love to return to again. We also had a great time in Cozumel and if you’re considering this unique itinerary, I highly recommend it! The Cozumel/Costa Maya itinerary is typically only offered one or a few times a year through Disney Cruise Line.

Each theme enhances your cruise experience, making it memorable and fun. The combination of Disney magic with unique destinations creates unforgettable adventures for everyone.

Exploring Galveston Before Embarkation

If you have time visit the area around Galveston that offers a vibrant mix of attractions and activities before you set sail. It’s a great place to explore local culture and enjoy some family-friendly fun. You can also combine your Disney cruise with other Texas adventures, making the most of your trip.

Visit the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier for amusement rides and games. Head to the Moody Gardens to see beautiful gardens, an aquarium, and a 3D theater. Don’t miss the chance to explore The Strand Historic District. This area is filled with shops, restaurants, and galleries. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach or visit the Galveston Sea Wall for stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico. Enjoy local seafood at places like Gaido’s or The Gumbo Bar.

Or if you prefer to spend more time in Houston before embarkation like we did, visiting the NASA facility or other Houston tourist spots are a great way to see more in the area. There’s lots to do in the area before or after your cruise.
