One of the most iconic free transportation options at Walt Disney World is the Monorail. This elevated train system runs between Magic Kingdom and select resorts, including Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Not only is it a convenient way to get around, but it also offers stunning views of the parks and resorts from above.

From the Ticket and Transportation Center, board the monorail that goes around to all of the Magic Kingdom resorts to do a resort tour, or ride the monorail over to EPCOT and back to the Magic Kingdom area for a bit of sightseeing.

Discover the Disney Skyliner Experience

Another unique way to get around Walt Disney World is the Disney Skyliner. This gondola system connects Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT to select resorts, including Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney’s Riviera Resort, and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.

It’s a great way to relax and take in the scenery as you travel between destinations.

Also, from Disney Springs you can take the boat over to Port Orleans – Riverside or Port Orleans – French Quarter to enjoy the scenery or enjoy a quick service lunch! (We recommend the beignets at Disney’s Port Orleans – French Quarter resort! Not free, but worth the boat ride over there to try them out!)

Walt Disney World offers a variety of free transportation options to help you get around the parks and resorts. Whether you’re looking for a quick and convenient way to travel, or a more scenic and relaxing experience, there’s something for everyone.

Entertainment and Performances

Watch the Electrical Water Pageant

If you’re looking for a unique and free nighttime entertainment option, the Electrical Water Pageant is a must-see. This colorful and lively parade of illuminated floats travels along the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake, passing by several Disney resorts.

The show features a variety of Disney characters and music, making it a fun and magical experience for all ages.

At many of the Disney resort hotels, you can enjoy a free outdoor movie screening under the stars. Grab a blanket or find a chair, bring some snacks, and settle in for a family-friendly movie. Times are posted on each resort’s activities board for the week.

The movie selection changes regularly, so be sure to check with your resort for the current schedule.

Experience Street Performers at Disney Springs

Disney Springs is a bustling outdoor shopping and dining district with a lively atmosphere. One of the highlights of a visit to Disney Springs is the street performers. From musicians to acrobats to magicians, there’s always something exciting happening. Best of all, these performances are completely free to enjoy.

Disney Springs also just added a new limited time show, Disney Dreams That Soar. This nighttime spectacular is made with over 800 drones that light up the night sky. Catch this show through September 2, 2024 only at Disney Springs nightly at 9PM and 10:45PM.

Resort Activities Without a Room Key

If you’re not staying at a Walt Disney World Resort but still want to experience some of the magic, there are plenty of activities available to you. Here are some of the best things you can do without a room key.

Resort Hopping Adventures

One of the best things about Walt Disney World Resort is the variety of resorts available. Each one has its own unique theming and atmosphere, and you can explore them all without staying there.

Take a stroll through Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and enjoy the tropical ambiance, or visit Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and experience the rustic charm of the Pacific Northwest.

I enjoy visiting the different resorts, especially during the holiday season, to see what the unique atmosphere is like within each location.

Campfire Sing-a-Long at Fort Wilderness

Fort Wilderness Resort is a hidden gem at Walt Disney World. It’s a campground that offers a variety of activities, including a nightly campfire sing-a-long. Gather around the fire with other guests and sing classic Disney songs while roasting marshmallows.

Explore the Wilderness Lodge

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is a beautiful resort that’s worth exploring. Take a walk around the grounds and admire the stunning architecture and landscaping. You can also visit the resort’s restaurants and gift shops, even if you’re not staying there.

There are lots of interesting free things to do at Walt Disney World Resort areas, even if you’re not staying at one of the hotels. From resort hopping to campfire sing-a-longs, there’s something for everyone. So why not add some extra magic to your trip and try out some of these activities?

Stroll Around the Boardwalk

Disney’s Boardwalk is a great place to relax and unwind. Take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk and enjoy the beautiful views of Crescent Lake.

You can also visit the many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues that line the boardwalk. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a surrey bike and explore the area with your family or friends. During the holiday season, make sure to stop in to the Boardwalk Inn to see their gingerbread displays!

Resort Holiday Displays

On my recent holiday trip, I took time to visit a number of different resorts and see their holiday decor. While this tour is a topic all of its own, if you’ll be visiting during the holiday season I recommend carving out a bit of time to see resorts that you aren’t staying at, to admire the decor and possibly even get some ideas for future stays!

These resorts typically have large gingerbread holiday displays each year, and are worth the trip over to view them:

  • Disney’s Grand Floridian – Gingerbread House (Annually)
  • Disney’s Contemporary Resort – Gingerbread Castle Scene in 2023
  • Disney’s Beach Club Resort – Gingerbread Carousel (Annually)
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Gingerbread Giraffe & Zebra (Annually)
  • Disney’s Boardwalk Inn Resort – Gingerbread Boardwalk (Annually)
